Meliá Hotels enters Sri Lanka to manage three hotels

For the first time Meliá Hotels International,17th biggest hotel chain worldwide which was founded 1956 will enter the leisure sector in Sri Lanka this year. The Spanish hotel chain, has 100,000 rooms under their management. this is the first time that the Spanish Group is entering the South Asian region.

Asia Pacific Development Vice President Nancy C. S. Ning told the Daily News Business on the sidelines of the THINC Conference at Galle Face Hotel yesterday that the company decided to start operations in Sri Lanka due to high up market arrivals to the country.

"In addition, high economic growth, good infrastructure backed up by economic and political stability too enticed us to come to Sri Lanka," she said.

The company will enter in to three agreements with three hotels in Sri Lanka.

Currently the hotel chain operates 374 hotels in 40 countries in four continents under the brands Meliá, Gran Meliá, ME by Meliá, Paradisus,Innside by Meliá, TRYP by Wyndham, Sol Hotels and Club Meliá.

Asia Pacific Vice President, Gonzala Maceda while endorsing the same sentiments said that they are looking to manage three hotels in Sri Lanka. "One will be a 200 roomed city hotel and we will ink the contact in this regard by August."

"In addition we will sign another management agreement with another hotel company situated between Bentota and Galle to manage another 100 roomed resort hotel with beach frontage.

He also disclosed that they will look at another hotel in the Eastern Province next year in a bid to give diversity to their hotel portfolio in Sri Lanka.
